My four years here at Iowa State University has done a very good job preparing me for the industry as it has taught me various skills outside of the regular course load such as how important communication is as well as how to be an effective and efficient member in a team. While here, I have learned how to figure out problems and solve them using different techniques, such as breaking a problem down into smaller pieces and to tackle them one at a time instead of tackling a huge issue by itself.
Working in groups is one of the most important if not the most important skill for engineers with the exception of communication, which goes hand in hand with group work. Working in groups helped me understand professionalism due to working with professors and some upperclassmen that have more knowledge in a subject than myself. This not only helped classwork, but it also helped with learning activities outside of the classroom. For example, in my study abroad I had the opportunity to work with engineers from all around the world and it was important to not only understand how they problem solve in a group, but what their strengths are and how to use them the best way.
If I were to do college all over again, I wouldn't do much different. I do know that I would take an entire semester for a study abroad because the experience is phenomenal. I would have also changed my study habits as it took me a few semesters to figure out how to study for exams efficiently.
